Kansas City was once a mecca for shops like Bonnie Freeland’s dainty Madame Hatter’s Tea Room in downtown Eudora, lodged in a magnificent structure built as the Kaw Valley Bank in the 1800s. The vault is now outfitted with an array of hats and feather boas, if one is inclined to dress up for the occasion. The periwinkle-painted dining room appeals to nostalgic women and little girls, but the kitchen does put out a limited selection of good, hearty lunches; it’s a package deal that includes a house salad, an entrée and a dessert. Eudora is on the way to Lawrence from K.C., if you feel that you need a cold beer and a burger after all that Victorian gentility.
