When the Mirabile brothers — Leonard and executive chef Jasper Jr. — moved their late father’s namesake restaurant from 75th Street to its newer location at 103rd Street, the restaurant changed from fancy to less formal. But it’s still sophisticated, and gracious attention to detail (chilled forks with salads, cocktails delivered on silver trays) lives on. But instead of dramatic tableside dishes, Jasper Jr.’s kitchen now offers pastas, veal, beef and chicken creations and fresh seafood prepared simply or in decadent cream sauces. And the five-tier dessert cart is to confections what Italy’s famed Ufizzi Galleries are to classic paintings. - Charles Ferruzza

Last evening my wife, our daughter, and I dinned at Jaspers. Overall we were satisfied with our experience and may return at some future date. Several things spoiled what otherwise would have been a great experience. First, our waiter was overly attentive, returning several times to the table to inquire, “How is everything”. While some may appreciate this type of attention, after the third time it became annoying. Second, while décor/atmosphere was very nice and appropriate, the restaurant acoustics left a great deal to be desired. Because of reverberations, it was difficult, if not impossible, for the three of use to converse without raising our voices. After a while the noise level became tiring. The restaurant definitely needs to invest in some sort of sound deadening in the main dining room. Finally, we were disappointed with the sauce served with two of our pasta dishes. The sauce is question was a thin, sweet tomato sauce that was very reminiscent of Campbell’s cream of tomato soup – but with more garlic. We were definitely not impressed by Jasper’s tomato sauce. While the tomato sauce lacked character, the Bruschetta Alla Gaspare antipasto was excellent as were the dessert selections. One final note, the prices shown on Jasper’s online menu (http://www.jasperskc.com/menu.htm) appear to be out-of-date.

Overall:

We spent WAY more money than we intended, but everything was so fantastic, I barely noticed. We got the lobster ravioli appetizer, with a creamy tomato sauce, and it was so flavorful and delicious, we could have ordered round after round of that (with plenty of bread to soak up the delicious sauce) and would have been pleased. My entree was less than awe-inspiring, to the point that I don't really even remember what it was.
Overall, though, with an impressive wine list, and excellent potential displayed by the appetizer, this restaurant is on my top-five already, after just my first visit.
