El Quetzal

1410 Minnesota Avenue
Kansas City, Kan., KS 66102
913-281-9122
Even though Guatemala shares a border with Mexico, the countries have quite different culinary styles. Dining at this six-table pupuseria on Minnesota Avenue is like dining in someone’s kitchen; there's a TV mounted on one wall and a terrycloth towel depicting The Last Supper draped over one window. The menu isn’t elaborate, but the half-dozen meals it does list are comforting, served with freshly made flour tortillas, black beans and a simple salad of iceberg lettuce, cucumber slices and half of a lime. The real reason to come here, though, is for a hot, grilled pupusa – a cross between a thick pancake and a tortilla – stuffed with pork, or beans and cheese, or cheese and loroco buds; these soft, gooey delicacies are served with a generous supply of curtido (a relish of crisp chopped cabbage, carrots and onions marinated in lime juice). Or for a Guatemalan breakfast of fried eggs, black beans, fried plantains, a hunk of farmer's cheese and hot tortillas, served morning and afternoon.
