This large, free-standing building contains a cavernous dining room, decorated with serapes and neon beer signs, that couldn’t be less attractive. But the cuisine is more authentic than most surburban Mexican restaurants, with lots of choices including seven kinds of inexpensive steak dishes, six versions of the quesadilla, five different presentations of a fajilta dinner and no fewer than 30 combination plates (and, for diners who just can’t decide, the “Little Bit of Everything” plate, with a chalupa, chile relleno, taco, enchilada, tamale, rice and beans). El Maguey also cooks up several excellent hot soups and serves huevos rancheros day and night. And sangria by the glass! - Charles Ferruzza
