Best Street Party

Polski Day in Strawberry Hill
Controversy might have surrounded this year's Polski Day (regarding who held the rights to the official parade), but there was no question where the party was. On May 5, the annual parade made two KCK stops: one at the St. Joseph-St. Benedict's Church on South Eighth Street, the other under a tent at Annette's Colonial Club in Strawberry Hill. On that sunny afternoon, moms and dads shared long tables with 20-something singletons downing cans of Bud and chatting up old men in overalls, while a legion of bikers in leather chaps and doo-rags parked their hogs up and down the block. The Colonial Club served heaping helpings of kielbasa, Polish sausage and stuffed cabbage. Then there was the music. A talented polka ensemble serenaded the tent with a rousing oompah-oompah, which culminated in the ever-popular chicken dance, where little girls and their grandpas shimmied, flapped their wings and baak baak baa-gokked.
