Best Actor in a Bad Play

Ron Megee
Every Christmas Story Ever Told at the American Heartland Theatre
Here was a Christmas miracle. Flaunting his trademark mix of goofball grace and full-on abandon, Late Night Theatre leader-in-exile Ron Megee managed to take the American Heartland's lump of Christmas coal — we'd say the pandering comedy was inspired by those cram-all-of-Shakespeare-into-an-hour style of shows, but that would cheapen the word inspired and squeeze it into a diamond. He played a ditz of an actor who himself portrayed ditz after ditz in 90 minutes of slapdash Christmas parodies. He switched nimbly among enough costumes and characters to start a parade, and he was lively and buoyant and imaginative, whether as Mrs. Clause, a lady reindeer or grizzled old Yukon Cornelius. With deft timing and consummate inventiveness, Megee summoned laughs from the void. Here's hoping he was well-compensated.
